It’s really an allegorical depiction of the Christian life, the Christian’s journey from this world to the world to come.Īlong the way, Christian meets many different characters, he encounters all different kinds of challenges and difficulties, and at one point he finds himself locked up in this dungeon in a place called Doubting Castle. If you don’t know that story, it’s written about a man named Christian who’s on a journey, a journey from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City. While you’re turning there, let me recount one of my favorite stories from John Bunyan’s allegory The Pilgrim's Progress. This is the night before Jesus was crucified, these are the final instructions that he gives to his disciples, and we’re several weeks into that. This is part of an ongoing study through John’s Gospel, and in particular right now through the upper room discourse, chapters 13-17. Let me invite you to turn in your Bibles to John 14.
